Would It Be Cheaper

To fix me or maybe SueSue’s foot?  But before we go there… Guess what I found this morning while weeding at God-thirty in the morning, as in not too long after dawn?

rabbit nest 001 Got any idea?

rabbit nest 002 becoming clearer?

rabbit nest 003 Yep, a bunny nest.  No babies, though.  They are big enough to be out on their own and I’ve seen some of the young’uns out and about on the prairie.  Here’s where they were hiding out in plain sight -

rabbit nest 005 Remember the grass and weeds I’ve been needing to clean out around the daylilies and the iris? The one that I so brashly stated that would only take a couple of days to clean out?  I guess the reason I didn’t get out sooner to start was because the babies needed time to grow and leave the nest…

rabbit nest 009 and start eating on my ONE good head of cabbage.  It was beautiful. July 26 09 006 Four days ago. Late in the afternoon, early evening.

rabbit nest 008 Today, after bunny brunch.  This cabbage was just right and big. Four and a half pounds of wonderful, sweet crunchy cabbage.  Now bunny food… Dang.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch… Me or SueSue?  Suess was on my heels in the kitchen when I was turning out the ice trays.  She likes the little crunchies that break off when I crack the trays. I took a few steps towards the living room, talking to Carol.  I turned back to finish the ice… and stepped on SueSue.  I knew I was on her because I was barefoot and could feel her furry foot.  I jerked my foot off and fell square on my knee.

She is okay.  I’m not sure about me.

whack a knee 8.4.09 003 Didn’t hurt when I landed. Felt kind of like a denim burn.  I had on jeans.more knee whack 8.4.09 004 I took these about twenty minutes after it happened. It didn’t hurt to walk.  I got in the tub and noticed it had started to swell.  Now it hurts like being stuck with a hot poker whenever I move my leg.  Dang! Double Dang!  Poopy baby diapers DANG.

Why couldn’t I just have stepped on the Baby Girl?!! At least I’ve got ice for the ice packs.

I’ll keep you posted on whether I’m more costly than SueSue.  Tomorrow…

I’m As Corny As Kansas In August…

My corn may not be as high as an elephant’s eye, but the good day corn is up to my waist and I’m not a short gal.

Corn report 8.2.09 001 You notice that the corn bed remains relatively free of grass.

good day corn This is the good day corn.

bad day corn Bad day corn.  Of the 10 seeds I planted in each row,  I have 3 in the bad day row.

good day corn (2) I have 6 that came up on the good corn day.  Although I could manage to get by without saying it if you look at the other good corn day you will see a little short runt corn stalk trying to hang in there, so I’m not pulling it up. I’ll just consider it a part of the test, too.

blackeyed peasThe black eyed peas are loaded.

Now, I’ll show you what I’ve been doing the last couple of days besides spelling Carol on the mower…

Corn report 8.2.09 026 Yes, ma’am.  I’ve been weeding or maybe I should call it grassin’.

Corn report 8.2.09 027 I had a lot of tough thinking to do and when that happens I dig.  And I weed.Corn report 8.2.09 028 This area is next.  This is where I’ve got daylilies and iris planted.  It’s been neglected because of trying to tend the garden.

Corn report 8.2.09 029 There’s my stool and my gloves… waiting on me.  I figure it will take me two days because the temperature is heading back towards the triple digits, 99 F.  tomorrow and 101 F. is predicted for Tuesday.

So what do you all have going on to start your week off?

When I Said We Were Getting Rain...

I wasn't kidding. This photo shows what I have awakened to at least three mornings in the last week. Our ground in the garden is soooo wet that I haven't been able to get out and weed. And actually, I miss doing it. Getting my hands in the dirt is so soothing to me when I'm stressed or blue or just tired of feeling lousy and tired.

When I went out to the garden today I was able to do a little bit of weeding, but mostly I sank up to my ankles and decided that I was pushing it. We have had sunshine today for most of the afternoon and I should be able to go out tomorrow and play in the dirt without it being all mud.
That being said and my excuses being put out there... here are some photos of my garden, as it is now, grass, weeds and all, what there is of it that I could photos of without getting stuck in the mud.

To the left... cabbage and grass.

Here we have onions and grass...

Potatoes and grass...

Onions, garlic and grass... oh, and two hoses that I haven't had to use in two weeks, except to wash the mud off my feet and/or sandals from when I tried to get out in the garden to pull up weeds and grass.

Tomatoes (in the four cages), onions and one damn weed. I went in today, very carefully, to check out the ground and as I was walking to go back out I decided that I had to pull that one damn weed. I took one step, very carefully, it was okay. I took another... and sank up above my ankle. I said a few choice words and went in and got that weed anyhow. I figured since I was going to have to hose myself off that weed was coming out.

These weeds get to live until tomorrow.

Hope all of you that needed rain have gotten it and I hope that all of us that have gotten it get one more day of sunshine so we can clean out some of the weeds.

It's supposed to rain here again Saturday night and Sunday.

But on a good note... Dar, I haven't seen your 'gator around here... yet.
