The Spoils Of War…

I just thought that since I’d written about the ‘beetle battles’ that have been going on in the garden I should show you some pictures of why it has been worth it…

sunflowers and produce 005 The peaches behind the tomatoes were bought at the farmer’s market.  The okra and tomatoes are out of our garden. Cuz took this photo so I'd get to see the first okra picked since I was in Ft. Worth when it got picked.

garden goodies and okra 004 Another batch of tomatoes…

garden goodies and okra 005 Squash, bell peppers and okra…

garden goodies and okra 006 Red, or new, potatoes.  We put them on the ground to wash off the dirt after we dig them up.  Saves having to clean the sink so much.

And for all you okra lovers out there, this one’s for you:

garden goodies and okra 001 Gooooood  eatin’!!!

Man, that just looks so GOOD!!!! What a green thumb and a great harvest, SASS! I canNOT go one more year without planting a garden like I used to. There's just nuthin' like going right out your backdoor and bringing in breakfast or dinner. YUMMMMMM!!!! Is anything prettier than homegrown fruits and veggies?!

Okra! OMG, I could eat my weight in fried okra! And that's a LOT of okra, lb wise, believe me!!
I can't wait to get home and get a garden going again. Every darn time I've tried to get one going here, it's been a dismal failure.
If mine looking half as good as yours, I would be a happy, happy woman!!

This time of year is so wonderful. Our garden is a little behind yours but when it ripens I'll have countertops filled with tomatoes and peppers!

What lovely looking vegetables. But help me please: I've eaten okra on holiday in Greece, but only because I craved vegetables and on the Greek islands you rarely get much more than tomatoes. Apologies for saying this Helen, but I found them absolutely unspeakable, both in texture and flavour. I acknowledge however that it may have been the way they were cooked. How do you do them? And if you don't peel them isn't the skin tough? I'm willing to re-learn!

Great harvest! I'm still waiting for my veggies to ripen. Don't you just love that fresh from the garden taste? Yummmm! There is nothing better.

What a great idea to wash the potatoes off in the garden! I'll remember that one.

Enjoy the journey.

Nope, SASS, nothing is prettier... unless it's flowers out of your own garden... you know how I love flowers.

Katie it has been a very good year for our garden. Plenty of rain so we didn't have to start watering regularly until the last 10 days when the weather decided to go to the 100's +... and no rain.

Threads welcome to red dirt country. The main thing I regret about the garden this year is that I didn't plant more peppers. Only 3 bell pepper plants and one jalapeno plant. We've gotten quite a few bell peppers from only 3 plants and the jalapenos are just now coming on... Thanks for stopping by.

Laura tell me drool... I've had to carry a hand towel around to wipe my mouth so's folks wouldn't think I had hoof and mouth disease! I go out and pick and some of the little Juliet hybrid tomatoes I can't resist popping in my mouth warm off the vine... mmmmmm good.

You are somewhat further north Sara. Ours started ripening really well about 3 weeks ago when the rains slacked off and we started getting into the 90's F. I'm glad I can give you something to look forward to, fresh off the vine tomatoes.

Karen I just write about what's going on in my life and right now it's all about garden... love you my friend. If I weren't so busy tending the garden I'd bring some up to you all and the Mocks!

How were they cooked Caroline? Boiled or fried? The only way I'll eat them is fried because boiled with tomatoes in them they,to me, are slimy. Yuck. You have to pick them before they get too big or they get woody and tough on the outside and the southern way I was raised on them was cut up crossways, dredged in beaten eggs and cornmeal, only seasoned with a bit of salt and maybe a little pepper. Heat up the oil pretty hot in a cast iron skillet and fry away. You don't stir them, you turn them over with a spatula or pancake turner until they're brown. Fried okra and fresh tomatoes are two foods that are eagerly awaited by most anyone that was raised on southern cooking. My Bro likes to throw some cajun spices in the cornmeal when he cooks them but I don't much care for those spices. I want it cooked like my mama made it.

And who among us can resist eating a fresh tomato right off the vine while we are out there picking our dinner. Gives us an extra bit of energy! When your garden starts coming on, Hetty, you'll have to share some photos with us.

Mandy it helps to eliminate the dirt that might clog up the kitchen pipes. I usually have a bucket that I wash them in but it was full of okra and tomatoes so I figured I'd give the grass a drink and clean the potatoes all at the same time... multi-tasking, don't you know...

Thanks, Cindy. I bet we have given away 30-40 pounds of tomatoes to neighbors and Cuz has taken a bunch up to her church that she sent off with the counselors to church camp to help with feeding the kids. Her sister fussed at her that she ought to be canning them but she told her she didn't want to can them, she was having too much fun sharing.

Rick I love the Okie in you that appreciates the photos of the tomatoes and okra and especially the okra frying!

Oh, yeah, Tina... it is an okra fry up for sure. We all get excited around here when the okra starts coming on because we all get so hungry for it. I think that was the third day in a row that we had fried okra... boy is it good. And the maters and taters taste even better than they look.

Tipper I'm sorry that there wasn't any squash in those photos but we have eaten it as it gets picked. Those seeds make a wonderful thin skinned squash that is delicious. I'm going to order seeds from them next year. And for no larger of an area that we planted we've had bumper crops so far. The neighbors love us!
