Oklahoma Simmers This Summer…

710 NE 18 1953-2 This is the home I grew up in from the age of about four and a half.  There were six of us kids spread out over a 17 year period and I’m the next to the youngest.  Before this home the only home I remember was a much smaller shotgun home.  For those of you that don’t know what a shotgun home is it’s one that you can open the front door and the back door and shoot a shotgun and it will go straight through.  I don’t remember for certain but I think in was a three bedroom, one bathroom for all eight of us… six kids and mom and dad.  Any way, my dad worked hard in growing his and his partner’s company and dad and mom both were very frugal and so they were able to buy this home about four blocks away from the capitol in Okla. City.

1005 This is the ‘big house’ as I call it from the back.  The reason I decided to post and write about the home I grew up in is because back in the day we had no air conditioning.  The house was built facing the north and there were lots of windows as you can see from these photos.  In the summertime the windows were open and if there was any southern breeze at all even on the hottest of days at night time it cooled enough to be able to sleep good.

Today the a/c quit at Cuz’s house.  It’s 2:45 a.and it’s almost cooling down enough that I may be able to go to sleep.  It was only 104 F. today and is supposed to be 105 degrees tomorrow with 100 + degree heat all week. It’s down to 82 degrees right now, I have the windows in my room opened and the fan blowing on high and it is almost comfortable.   Hopefully the a/c  people will be out tomorrow and be able to repair it.

Ya know, 50-55 years ago the heat didn’t seem to bother us… now it’s almost  impossible for me to deal with in my 60’s.  All I want to do is sit very still in front of the fan turned on to high and for once I can definitely say it’s not a hot flash… It’s just H.O.T.

I hope your a/c is fixed by the time you read this comment. We have recently moved into a house without it but we are much farther north. Although yesterday it was close to 90 and I was feeling pretty sticky. Thanks for stopping by my blog! I love hearing from my readers.

I HATE the heat. I was sitting here this morning, feeling sorry for myself and my flower beds because it's so darned hot....and then I noticed the six guys on top of the building next door, getting ready to install a new TIN roof. That would be kinda like Hell on Earth, wouldn't it? Anyway, I felt a little guilty and a lot glad I'm sitting in the AC watching them. :)

I enjoyed my visit and have you book marked. I don't get a lot of reading done during the summer because of the garden but I will be checking back in on you.

Isn't it fun, Staci, to sit inside with the a/c going and watching other people working? I would imagine that with the roof being tin they will want to start early in the morning... tin gets hot quick!

A/C got fixed after lunch today. I'm sure going to enjoy sleeping tonite! We hit 105 today but I didn't hear what the heat factor was... probably not too bad as the humidity is down right now.

Karen if the a/c guy wasn't able to come out today I was going to go find a motel for me and the girls. We all three pretty much laid around panting today.

I don't know why kids don't feel the heat (or cold) like we 'seniors' do. Hope you get the a/c fixed. We have had the hottest summer so far since records were kept. And me without my pool. :-(

Oh but I get the flashes too & in the middle of the night even with AC running-I have to have fans everywhere got to have air moving. Yes I too am MUCH less tolerant of the heat than in my childhood. Yesterday my car thermometer read 119! Today it's supposed to be 113 & it's monsoon so the humidity os UP!
Stayin' home in the AC hope yours is fixed soon!
